You know the type..I like to call them "undercover cowards" but they are the passive aggressive ones. The ones who can't just come out and say, "you know what, I don't like you" or "I have an issue with you". So they have a subtle behavior, a very childish demeanor of either pretending not to hear you, choosing to deliberately do the opposite of whatever task you give them (if you are in leadership or management), or gossiping about you.
I'm gonna give you some tips on how to deal with this kind of person. Even if you are the kind of person that doesn't like confrontation, these tips will benefit you in the long run.
1. Demand Respect
I'm not saying that you go all "West Side Story" style in that person's face, but you can't take a tail-between-the legs approach either.
This person has to know that you recognize that behavior and you're not gonna put up with it. They don't have to like you but they have to respect you.
2. Talk it out
This goes hand in hand with #1. Go to that person in private (so they won't feel the need to show out) and try to talk about what the problem is that they have with you. Sometimes a mediator is necessary. Get a neutral party to accompany you so they can hear both sides out and help diffuse the situation.
3. Kindness
If you absolutely can't see yourself confronting that person and that is not an option for you, then kill em with kindness. Sometimes you can make a person feel very foolish for their childish behavior when you extend a merciful hand out to them. If you see that person is struggling in an area where you can help them, then offer to help them.
You will find in most situations that their problem is not with you at all, but themselves. Some people have inner struggles that they don't know how to deal with so they project all of their hostility off on you.
As much as you may want to do this..
